Making a change to your motor insurance
We know that things don't often stay the same for long. That's why when you make changes to your motor insurance policy, we won't charge any admin fees.
How to make a change to your policy
If you’d like to make a change to your policy, who to get in touch with depends on where you bought your policy from.
If your policy number ends in 'N19', you bought your policy from Mutual Direct. If not, you bought your policy from an agency office.
You'll find the contact details of where you bought your policy from in the top right of the first page of your policy documents.
If you don't have your policy documents to hand you can find contact details for Mutual Direct or your agency office through contact us about Motor Insurance.
Information to have ready
Before contacting us, please take a few minutes to read the details below relating to the type of change you'd like to make to your policy.
You can help us to make the changes you need as quickly as possible by having all the information listed below ready when you speak to us.
What change would you like to make?
If you want to swap a vehicle on your policy, we'll need to know the registration number of the vehicle you'd like to remove from your policy.
We'll then need all the standard information about your new vehicle including:
- Vehicle registration number.
- Whether you are the legal owner and/or registered keeper. You must be the registered keeper to take out insurance with us.
- When you bought it.
- Its market value. If you have just purchased it, this is the price you paid. If the vehicle isn’t new, this is how much you would expect to sell the vehicle for. Valuation tools are available on the internet to help you work this out.
- Details of any modifications to the vehicle.
- What you will use it for, e.g. domestic use only or for commuting and/or business purposes.
- How many miles you expect to drive it in a year.
- The address the vehicle will be kept at.
- How it will be kept at that address, e.g. in a locked garage or parked on-street in a residential area.
- Who will drive the vehicle most often.
When you add a vehicle to your policy we’ll ask for all of the standard information about the vehicle you are adding:
- Vehicle registration number.
- Whether you are the legal owner and/or registered keeper. You must be the registered keeper to take out insurance with us.
- When you bought it.
- Its market value. If you have just purchased it, this is the price you paid. If the vehicle isn’t new, this is how much you would expect to sell the vehicle for. Valuation tools are available on the internet to help you work this out.

When you add a named driver permanently to your policy, we’ll ask you for all of the information you have provided for the main driver of the policy, but for the person you would like insured as a named driver. We'll ask for their:
- Date of birth and title.
- Insurance history: whether they have been refused insurance, had insurance cancelled, declared void (as though it never existed) or had any special terms or conditions imposed.
- Licence type: the type of driving licence they hold. If they've held it for less than five years, we'll need to know the date it was issued.
- Claims history: details of any incidents, including the date and claim value, that they've made in the last five years, whether they were at fault or not.
- Financial history: whether they have been subject to any form of bankruptcy proceedings (whether discharged or not), e.g. Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs)/Trust Deeds, been subject to any other statutory insolvency proceedings, e.g. Company Voluntary Arrangements, at any time in the past and/or Court Judgements, e.g. CCJs, in the last five years whether satisfied or not.
- Criminal history: if they have been convicted of any non-motoring offences in the last five years or have any prosecutions pending or unspent.
- Employment status: if they work, their job and the type of business they work for.
- Home ownership status: whether they are a homeowner.
- Driving licence details: any restrictions the DVLA has placed on their licence.
You can add a driver temporarily to an NFU Mutual Car Insurance policy for up to 30 days.
We'll need to know:
- Between what dates you would like the person to be covered to drive the car insured on the policy.
- The reason you would like to add them to your policy as the cover currently in place may not cover their usage.
- The same information about them that we would need if you were adding them permanently (see above).
To remove a driver from your policy, you'll just need to tell us the name of the driver you would like to remove.
When you change the address your car is insured at, we’ll need to know whether you own the property that it will be insured at and where the car will be kept overnight, e.g. in a locked garage or parked on-street in a residential area.
If you contact us to cancel your policy, we'll ask you about your reason for cancelling to find out if there is anything we can help you with so that you can continue your cover in a way that works for you.
If there has been a change to your vehicle or your circumstances that mean you need to make a change to your policy, you can do this without paying any admin fees.
However, if you do choose to leave us then we’ll ask you for the policy number that you would like to cancel.
If you pay by annual payment and you are due a refund, we’ll explain how much your refund will be and how it will be paid to you. If you pay by Direct Debit, we’ll confirm how the Direct Debit will be cancelled and when.
